How to Overlay PDF Documents: Combine Two PDF Files on the Same Pages
Need to stamp a letterhead over a document, or merge a watermark layer with your content? Learn how to overlay one PDF on top of another.
Merging PDF Files puts documents back-to-back — page 1 of File A, page 2 of File A, then page 1 of File B. But what if you need to put File B on top of File A, so both appear on the same pages?
This is called PDF Overlay, and it is essential for:
- Adding a company letterhead to an existing document
- Stamping a "DRAFT" or "APPROVED" template across every page
- Combining a transparent logo layer with a report
- Merging a form template with filled-in data
Our free PDF Overlay tool places one PDF document directly on top of another, combining both into a single unified file.
Overlay vs. Merge: What Is the Difference?
| Operation | What Happens | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Merge | Files are placed back-to-back | 5-page doc + 5-page doc = 10-page doc |
| Overlay | Files are stacked on the same pages | 5-page doc + 5-page doc = 5-page doc (combined) |
With an overlay, the content of both files appears on each page — like printing on both sides of a transparency sheet and stacking them.
Common Overlay Scenarios
1. Letterhead Templates
You have a blank PDF with your company's letterhead (logo, address, borders). You want to apply it to a plain document so it looks like it was printed on official stationery. Overlay the letterhead template on top of (or behind) your content.
2. Approval Stamps
You have a single-page PDF with a large "APPROVED" or "CONFIDENTIAL" stamp. Overlay it on every page of the target document to mark it as reviewed.
3. Form Backgrounds
You have a form template (the blank form with labels and lines) and a data layer (the filled-in responses). Overlaying them produces a completed form.
4. Design Layers
Graphic designers sometimes create different layers of a document as separate PDF Files (background, content, decorative elements). Overlaying them produces the final composite.
How to Overlay PDF Files
- Upload: Go to the PDF Overlay tool and upload your two PDF files — the base document (the one that goes underneath) and the overlay document (the one placed on top).
- Configure: Choose whether the overlay goes above or below the base content.
- Process: Click "Overlay PDF." The tool combines both files page-by-page.
- Download: Save the unified document.
How Pages Are Matched
If the base document has 10 pages and the overlay has 1 page, the single overlay page is applied to all 10 pages. If both documents have the same number of pages, they are matched one-to-one (overlay page 1 goes on base page 1, overlay page 2 goes on base page 2, etc.).
Pro Tips
- Use Transparent PDF Files: For the best results, the overlay document should have transparent areas so the base content shows through. A letterhead with a white background will cover the base content entirely.
- Test with One Page First: Before overlaying a 50-page document, test with a single page to verify the alignment looks correct.
- Combine with Watermarks: If you just need text stamps, our Add Watermark tool may be simpler. Use Overlay for more complex multi-element designs.
