What Does Flattening Actually Do?
Think of a PDF with form fields as having two layers:
- The Page Layer: The background content — text, images, and design that you cannot edit.
- The Interactive Layer: Form fields, annotations, comments, stamps, and markup that sit on top and can be clicked and changed.
Flattening merges these two layers into one. The form data and annotations are permanently printed onto the page layer. They still look the same, but they can no longer be selected, edited, or removed.
