How do I remove metadata from a PDF?

What is PDF metadata?
Metadata is information stored inside the PDF that isn't visible on the pages: the title, the author's name, the subject, keywords, the app used to create the file, and the creation and modification dates. Anyone can see it in the document properties of a PDF reader.
What exactly is removed?
The whole document information dictionary (title, author, subject, keywords, creator app, producer, creation date, and modification date), the XMP metadata, and private data saved by the app that created the PDF.
Is anything left after cleaning?
Only what people can see. The tool also removes the author names and dates on comments and sticky notes, and the hidden data inside photos (such as camera EXIF details and GPS location), without changing the photos. What stays is everything written on the pages, the text of comments, and form fields with their names and values. Delete comments or fields before cleaning if their text shows names.
Will my PDF look the same?
Yes. Only the hidden properties are removed. Pages, text, images, links, bookmarks, and form fields are not changed.
How can I check that the metadata is gone?
Open the cleaned PDF and look at its properties, for example with File > Properties (Ctrl+D) in Adobe Acrobat Reader. The title, author, and dates fields are empty.
